What I've missed most of all is the sense of community we had when we would gather to taste and talk about wines. So, I'm starting small and inviting those folks who have been so supportive of my efforts over time. Our first class back on the Bay is going to be a comparison of some delicious wines from all over the world. The Goddess of Wine and JD started off Tuesday at their home-away-from-home, the Savory Palette in Morro Bay. Our little group of "Paletteers" tries to meet every Tuesday afternoon to catch up on the week's events, trials, and tribulations, while supporting our local wine bar. After a delicious and very filling dinner, everyone at the table decided to order dessert - actually a rarity in my family, but that's another story. And then I get to assess it and write about it. Things being what they are these days, I'm a little behind in my reviews, so here we go:Al Scheid first saw potential in Monterey County in 1972 when the wine region was in its infancy. What started as a grape growing operation that sold 100% of its production to other Goddess of Winehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03511448158492095179noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3636693202445289057.post-59828208733285206092021-03-17T12:45:00.000-07:002021-03-17T12:45:07.046-07:00Living in the time of Coronavirus...moving forward...I went to the doctor this week. Just for a checkup. We hadn't seen each other since December 2019, and being conscientious about my health - and getting nagging phone calls from his office to come in for a checkup - I finally felt it was time to go. I like my doctor a lot. He really listens, and responds. Rare to find. So, we caught up, and we talked about the last year and the lockdownGoddess of Winehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03511448158492095179noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3636693202445289057.post-70235750864321987942021-03-11T11:09:00.000-08:002021-03-11T11:09:21.334-08:00Slowing wining back to 'normal'...JD & LarryThe Goddess of Wine and JD took a quick trip south to Los Olivos and Solvang. First time since December 2019. It felt good. And odd. JD's been running errands and making the occasional foray down to Ellay, but I haven't been anywhere south of San Luis Obispo. We stopped in at Tercero for a too-short visit with the irrepressible Larry Schaffer. He's got some new and interesting wines Goddess of Winehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03511448158492095179noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3636693202445289057.post-84415566536790971122021-03-02T12:10:00.005-08:002021-03-03T09:48:59.775-08:00A new year of wining...in San Simeon...A bucolic scene at San Simeon(photo by Rico Mandel)This past year has been so challenging for everyone. I am pleased and amazed to see how so many of my wine colleagues have pivoted (the latest buzz word) and adapted to the new normal. Many event planners have created online events, virtual tastings, all designed to keep their base engaged. Others, like myself, stepped back a bit, waiting to see Goddess of Winehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03511448158492095179noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3636693202445289057.post-72987917634179285672020-12-27T13:07:00.000-08:002020-12-27T13:07:15.286-08:002020, the gift that keeps on giving...I was really excited about 2020. After a pretty darn good year, I was going to take advantage of the momentum from 2019, increase the number of my wine classes, work more hours at various venues, and travel. Yeah...JD and I were supposed to spend a few weeks in England and France this year, but that was not to be.What a disaster 2020 has turned out to be. Global pandemic. Global shutdown. And the wines I've received recently reflect that. So when I opened a box and discovered three different sherries, accompanied by a big bag of Halloween candy, I thought it was just par for the course!Sherry is a wine that many folks think is old-fashioned, found only in Agatha Christie mysteries, or meant to be drunk by Goddess of Winehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03511448158492095179noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3636693202445289057.post-77587323881952927022020-10-08T17:18:00.000-07:002020-10-08T17:18:02.412-07:00Tasting out of your comfort zone...The Goddess of Wine gets crazy when a person says, "I don't drink xyz wine," or "I only drink xyz wine." I always ask, "Why would you limit yourself to what you already know?" So, when I'm approached by a wine rep or marketing person to try a wine that may not be something I regularly drink, I have to step outside my own comfort zone to taste it. Folks who know me well, know that I rarely Goddess of Winehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03511448158492095179noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3636693202445289057.post-63062646302015120632020-09-14T15:57:00.002-07:002020-09-14T16:01:05.936-07:00Serving wine in the time of Coronavirus...As some of you know, JD and I work 3 days a week at a winery tasting room. The wines are very reasonably priced, and our tasting fee has been $12 per person, waived with a wine purchase. Up until this weekend, we would waive tasting fees for everyone in a group if even one person bought one bottle of wine. You might say we have been very generous in this regard. We had 2 groups of guests on Goddess of Winehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03511448158492095179noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3636693202445289057.post-2505620772060065722020-08-24T16:09:00.005-07:002020-08-26T12:45:01.292-07:00#LifeinthetimeofCoronavirus...and everything elseA friend recently asked me about my writing. In fact, every time he sees me, he asks. 'How's the writing going?' And I always reply, 'Not really doing much writing right now. Still just not feeling it.' My colleagues who write a lot just tell me to keep at it. Write a little bit each day. Just form some sentences. Do the work. But right now my head is so full of anger and frustration about Goddess of Winehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03511448158492095179noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3636693202445289057.post-43842427513446685262020-05-07T08:48:00.000-07:002020-05-07T08:48:24.797-07:00Wining in the time of Coronavirus...
The GoW & JD pre-lockdown
Random thoughts during the lockdown:
Making the bed every day counts as an accomplishment.
Digging out old recipes that I haven't made in at least 25 years. Comfort food, as they're my mom's recipes.
Rereading books. Re-watching TV series. Not feeling the need to watch anything new.
Surprised at how easy it is to just stay home.
Discovering that it wasn't Goddess of Winehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03511448158492095179noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3636693202445289057.post-88529099430319921012019-12-19T16:15:00.000-08:002019-12-19T16:15:16.561-08:00Thanks and Happy Holidays!

Thanks to all the thirsty students of wine, the good-natured and patient wine bar owners, the wine company reps who consistently find amazing wines no matter what we ask for, and, of course, all the wine makers who create liquid magic for us.

And the theme is...?
We had an engaged and enthusiastic group of students at the July Tasting Blind class at the Morro Bay Wine Seller on Wednesday. As always, there was a theme to the wines, which I always hope students will figure out while they're tasting. This group did not disappoint - and neither did the wines!
As always, we had fresh-baked bread from #JDBakes on the tables for palate Goddess of Winehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03511448158492095179noreply@blogger.com0
